Backup power, planned around you
Heating, refrigeration, lighting, a sump pump or medical equipment can have different power needs. Tell us your priorities and whether you want automatic operation. We assess your Edmonds home before recommending capacity and circuit coverage.

Generator installation options
Compare the level of backup and automatic operation you need before choosing equipment.
01
A permanently installed generator and automatic transfer switch can supply designated circuits when utility power goes out. Capacity and load management are planned for your home.
02
Choose broader coverage or focus on the circuits you need most. Whole-home coverage does not mean every appliance can run at once; the design must account for starting and running loads.
03
Already own a portable generator? We assess its output, your panel and the intended circuits, then recommend an appropriate inlet and manual transfer or interlock arrangement.
Start with an assessment of your Edmonds home, panel, power priorities and fuel supply.

Your installation estimate
A generator’s purchase price is not the full installed project. Your Edmonds assessment looks at required electrical work, fuel availability and any equipment or site preparation needed to connect the system.
A free assessment is the first step; the generator, equipment and installation work are not free.
If natural gas is unavailable, ask about suitable fuel options and any separate tank or supplier requirements.
From first conversation to installation
01
We review your priorities, intended loads, electrical panel, available fuel and installation location.
02
Compare the recommended equipment, circuit coverage and required work before approving a project.
03
Electrical permitting, transfer equipment and any required utility or fuel-trade coordination are planned for the property.
04
The installation includes testing and a walkthrough of operation, safety and the system’s intended coverage.
The electrical-permit authority depends on the property’s jurisdiction. We confirm the requirements for your Edmonds service address and handle electrical permitting and inspection scheduling, with utility or fuel-trade coordination when needed. See Washington L&I’s city-permit guidance.
Your questions, answered
Yes, if the generator and electrical system are suitable. Dickson Electric can assess a manual transfer switch or approved interlock-and-inlet arrangement. We usually install the connection equipment for a portable generator supplied by the customer. The system still requires manual operation.
No. It can cost less, but the answer depends on the circuits, generator size, transfer equipment and fuel infrastructure. A smaller system may avoid some capacity work at one home but offer little savings at another. We compare the actual installation requirements.
An automatic standby system with an automatic transfer switch is designed to start and transfer the planned loads when utility power fails. There is a transition, so it is not the same as an uninterrupted power supply. The system must also have suitable fuel and be maintained.
Propane may be an option. The assessment needs to consider the tank, placement, piping and fuel requirements, not just the generator itself. We help you understand that complete scope before you commit to equipment.
Never run a fuel-burning generator indoors or in enclosed spaces, and never plug it into a wall outlet to supply your house. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use professionally assessed connection equipment. Read PSE's generator-safety guidance for more information.
Call to discuss scheduling, but a new installation is not an instant outage fix. Assessment, permits, equipment and coordinated electrical or fuel work are required. We do not promise same-day installation or 24/7 response. Call 911 for immediate fire, gas-leak or electrical danger.
Tell us what you want to keep running, whether you already own a generator and which fuel options are available. We’ll help you understand the next step.
